description Northern Highland - American Legion (NHAL) is the largest of the state forests with nearly 223,000 acres it offers plenty of natural wilderness and solitude. Due to its large size the forest has been spilt into two areas: Crystal Lake and Clear Lake for reservation purposes. For a full appreciation of all the forest has to offer please review both areas prior to making reservations. Clear Lake Area .
drivingDirection Check-in / Registration for all Crystal Lake Area family and wilderness sites is at the Crystal Lake Contact Station. To Crystal Lake Contact Station from the intersection of Hwys 51 and 47, travel north on Hwy 51, 6.2 miles to County Hwy M. Turn right on County Hwy M and go 2.7 miles to County Hwy N. Turn way N. right on County Hwy N and go 2 miles. The Crystal Lake Contact Contact station is on the left. To Jag Lake Group Campground from the intersection of Hwys 51 and 47, travel north on Hwy 51 approximately 13 miles to County Hwy H. Turn right on County Hwy H, go approximately 1.5 miles, to North Creek Road. Turn right on North Creek Road, go approximately 1 mile. The group camp is on the left. To North Muskellunge Group Campground from the intersection of Hwy 51 and 47, travel north on Hwy 51, 6.2 miles to County highway M. Go right on County Hwy M approximately 3 miles to Big Muskellunge Lake Road. Turn right on Big Muskellunge Lake Road, go approximately 2.5 miles. The group camp is on the right. To Big Lake Campground from the intersection of Hwys 51 and 47, travel north on Hwy 51 approximately 13 miles to County Hwy H. Turn right on County Hwy H, go approximately 4.8 miles to County Hwy K. Turn left on County Hwy K, go approximately 6.9 miles to County Hwy P. Turn right on County Hwy P, go approximately 1.2 miles. The campground is on the right.

importantInformation Crystal Lake and Muskie Lake Campgrounds share a fully staffed contact station, nature center, campground hosts, firewood sales, a disabled (ADA) access fishing pier, pay phones, a boat launch and a dump station. A bike path connects Crystal Lake and Firefly Lake Campgrounds to one another as well as to the town Boulder Junction. Firefly Campground has one boat launch located just outside the campground. No state park sticker is required to use the boat launch. Reservations can be made 11 months in advance, reservations are accepted for arrivals the Thursday before Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend . The maximum stay for reservable remote camping sites is 14 days, 7 days for group sites. The maximum stay for the family campground is 14 days. Some of the loops in the reservable campgrounds will be closed by locked gates, starting the day after Labor Day. Jag and Musky Group Sites: Maximum Stay is 7 consecutive days. Jag Group Camp site is TENT ONLY!! Plum Lake Campground is non-reservable at this time. For Reservable Remote Camping (wilderness sites) in Allequash, Day, or Nebish Campgrounds be sure you are in the Crystal Lake Area. Where to check in: Campers for Crystal Lake, Firefly Lake, Muskie Lake Campgrounds family sites, as well as Allequash Lake, Day Lake, and Plum Lake, South Trout Lake, and Nebish Lake Reservable Remote Camping sites must check in at the Crystal Lake Contact Station prior to setting up camp. Campground managers will register Jag Lake and North Muskellunge group campers at the group sites. The Allequash Lake, Day Lake and Nebish Lake reservable remote camping sites are accessible by water only. Vehicle admission stickers are required. Click here for cost of the sticker.
